Going Green – How You Can Do it

how to go green

If you are concerned about the potential health and environment effects of conventional cleaners, you may be wondering how you can ‘go green’ too. There are many ways you can reduce the need for chemical cleaners and help keep the air you and others breath cleaner!

  • When purchasing green products, look for EcoLogo or Green Seal certified products. These products are tested and certified to be truly eco-friendly and effective products
  • Use natural cleaners when possible. Vinegar is a common household ingredient used for cleaning. Although it cannot be used to clean everything, it works well to clean things such as windows and even some types of floors.
  • Check ingredients - Many products appear to be eco-friendly due to packaging, but are really just using the deceptive marketing technique known as “green washing.” Check ingredients to see if the products are low in VOCs and use renewable resources.
  • Work with a non-toxic cleaning company - There are both residential and commercial cleaners that will use green or non-toxic cleaning products. At Kitchener Clean, we use always use the highest quality EcoLogo or Green Seal certified products when possible!
  • Check reviews from other users to see which green or non-toxic cleaning product works well (and which ones don’t). You can check out some green cleaning product articles and reviews
  • Bulk / Group Purchase Online - gathering all the orders from friends and family, send inquiries to request one off shipment to 1 location. Reduce air pollution via multi location transport.

The survey found that 26% of respondents said that purchasing natural cleaning products was important to them, and 24% said that purchasing cleaning products with eco-friendly packaging was important to them. As we continue to learn more about the health and environmental impacts of chemical cleaners, it is likely that these numbers will continue to rise.

Ways to take care you beloved non-stick pots and pans.

ways to maintain non stick cookware

5 ways to maintain and enhance lifespan of your Non - stick coating

avoid high heat cooking

Never use high heat

Most manufacturers have a heat warning label on their pans, letting you know how much heat they can take. Pay attention to that. If you’re using a single-coating nonstick pan from Tesco, AEON Big etc, chances are yours are only good to 180 degree celcius. Others may be good to 232°C or higher, but that’s more often the exception rather than the rule.

Avoid major water temperature changes

Taking a hot pan and subjecting it to cooler or cold temperatures can cause your frying pan to warp. This affects cheaper pans more than industrial strength ones. Resist the temptation and don’t do it. Let your nonstick pan cool for a few minutes first. A warped pan keeps the heat from distributing correctly, and they’re annoying to cook with.

non scratch sponge

Clean your nonstick pans with scratch-proof scouring pads.

This is another big deal. Nonstick surfaces are sensitive to steel wool, metal scouring pads, sharp scrapers, and harsh cleaning detergents (more on detergents later). If your food is really stuck, allow the pan to soak for a bit, or you can deglaze the pan.  Use cleaning pans that say ‘nonstick pan safe’ on them or a stiff sponge instead.

There are 2 realiable brands in the market may consider, Scotch-Brite produced by 3M and Arix from Italy. Although Scotch-Brite is more popular , but for price, durability and performance, Arix is rather attractive than Scotch-Brite. *personal preferences.

Scotch-Brite is more easy to access at major of the departmental and hypermarket. But for Arix, you may only able to find it at high end grocery and departmental stores like Jaya Grocer, Village Grocer, Bens, Jason and Homepro.

Ecover dish detergent

Use softer detergents to clean your nonstick pans.

Use softer detergents on your non-stick pans. Most detergents used when hand washing dishes are considered soft. Dishwasher detergents, bleach, Ajax, and other cleaners are hard. These ones can damage the nonstick coating.

Suggest to use mild and and non toxic detergents.

aerosol cooking

NEVER use aerosol cooking spray.

Cooking spray will ruin your pan (and any other pan) faster than anything else I know, even if it’s the pure vegetable kind. The store-bought oil aerosol sprays build up and coat a pan’s surface when heated. It’s not an immediate effect, but rather what happens after prolonged, repeated use. I’m not sure what it is, but something about the way they’re produced makes a difference. Instead, use the self-pump oils or a small bit of regular oil. This goes for all pans. Aerosol sprays are better suited for situations where heat is not required.

So let’s summarize: Wash and dry by hand, Avoid high heats and acids, Don’t use metal or cooking spray.

Nonstick pans are fantastic to have in your kitchen, and if you take good care of them, they’ll last you for years, maybe even decades.
